Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Traditional political structures have played a significant role in the governance of Nigerian communities, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. In Jos South LGA, Plateau State, traditional leadership structures, such as district heads and traditional councils, continue to exert considerable influence over local governance, even with the establishment of modern democratic systems. These traditional leaders are often seen as intermediaries between the people and the government, holding the power to mediate conflicts, influence local politics, and direct community development (Bala & Tukur, 2023).

The interaction between traditional political structures and modern democratic governance creates a complex dynamic. While traditional leaders are revered for their cultural and historical significance, their involvement in politics can sometimes lead to conflicts with elected officials, resulting in tensions that affect governance. This study will explore the impact of these traditional political structures on governance in Jos South LGA, analyzing their role in political decision-making, conflict resolution, and community development.

Although traditional political structures have significant influence in Jos South LGA, their role in governance and the relationship between traditional leaders and elected officials is not well understood.
